Grok Review and How it Compares.
Grok (currently Grok 4.7, as of mid-October 2026) is a strong, rapidly improving frontier model that prioritizes value, agentic capability, real-time access, and fewer restrictions—rather than pure leadership on every composite intelligence benchmark.
Current Status and Development Pace
xAI / SpaceXAI has maintained an aggressive release cadence through 2026. Grok 4.5 arrived in July, Grok 4.6 in August, and Grok 4.7 around September 21. Parameter counts have scaled quickly: roughly 1.5T for 4.6, ~2.1T for 4.7, with Grok 4.8 planned as a 2.5T model trained on a new C++ software stack.
In mid-September, Elon Musk outlined the near-term ladder: Grok 4.7 roughly on par with (or better/worse than) models in the Opus 5 class in different areas, with multimodal still needing work; Grok 4.8 a noticeable improvement after finishing pretraining and entering reinforcement learning; Grok 4.9 expected in the elite Astra/Fable tier; and Grok 5 potentially leading the field or approaching AGI-level capability. As of mid-October, Grok 4.7 remains the public flagship while 4.8 continues post-training/RL.
Product development has been active alongside models: Grok Build for coding agents, Grok Bot agents (including email addresses and multi-model routing to the best backend for a task, such as Claude when stronger), Amazon Bedrock availability, Cursor integration, and deep real-time X/web search. The approach emphasizes practical utility, unique training signals (including SpaceX engineering data), and iterative speed.
Benchmark Comparisons
On the widely cited Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index (a composite of agentic knowledge work, coding/terminal, reasoning, and related tasks), Grok 4.7 (xhigh) scores approximately 46.4–46.5. This places it solidly in the upper pack but behind the current leaders:

Strengths relative to peers:
- Agentic knowledge work: Strong gains on AA-Briefcase and GDPval-style long-horizon tasks (high Elo scores, competitive with or near top Claude models in some metrics).
- Coding agents: Meaningful jump with the native Grok Build harness; improved Coding Agent Index placement.
- Cybersecurity: Reported #1 (or tied) on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, outperforming several higher-scoring general models on vulnerability-related evaluations.
- Cost and efficiency: Pricing around $2 / $6 per million tokens (input/output) with a 500K context window is highly competitive. Blended cost is lower than most top Claude and GPT flagships. Output speed is solid (~85+ tokens/second).
Relative weaknesses:
- Trails the absolute top tier on pure composite intelligence scores and some terminal/coding agent benchmarks (e.g., Terminal-Bench results vary and are often lower than Claude/GPT leaders).
- LMSYS/Arena human preference rankings for Grok 4.7-xhigh are respectable but not dominant (around Elo ~1444 in mid-pack rankings as of mid-October; earlier Grok variants sometimes rank higher).
- Multimodal performance has been acknowledged as an area still needing refinement.
- Context window (500K) is solid but smaller than the 1M windows on several Claude and GPT models.
GPQA Diamond (graduate-level science reasoning) scores for recent Grok models are high (Grok 4.6 around 92.8% in one set of results), though not always the absolute peak.
Overall Assessment
Grok 4.7 is an excellent value frontier model. It delivers competitive agentic, coding, and knowledge-work performance at a fraction of the cost of Claude Opus 5.5 or GPT-6 Astra, with standout real-time X/web access and fewer content restrictions than most peers. It is particularly well-suited for workflows that benefit from live information, coding agents, specialized domains (e.g., cybersecurity), or cost-sensitive scale.
It is not currently the single strongest model on every independent composite intelligence leaderboard—Claude (especially Opus 5.5 and related models) and top GPT variants generally lead those. Development velocity remains a clear advantage: the jump from earlier 2026 models to 4.7 was meaningful, and the 4.8/4.9/5 roadmap (larger models on improved training infrastructure) suggests continued rapid gains.
In short, Grok is closing the gap quickly on the absolute leaders while excelling on price/performance, uniqueness (real-time data + lower restrictions), and practical agentic tools. For many users and tasks, especially those valuing openness and efficiency, it is already a top choice; the next few releases will determine how close it gets to (or past) the absolute frontier.
